The Disappearance Of Tartan Ted Revealed

Lucy looked back and gave one last wave to Grandma. As soon as she was out of earshot, she said, ‘Horla, tell me it was you who moved the rocking chair.’

‘No, I didn’t move it,’ Horla replied matter-of-factly.

‘Oh my God – Grandad’s come back to haunt us!’

‘Relax, I’m only joking – it was me; I wasn’t expecting it to creak like it did though.’

‘And I wasn’t expecting Grandma to talk to it – that freaked me out that did.’

‘Yes, that was odd, and the bit about hearing it creaking at night was strange, but do you know what was stranger still?’

‘What?’

‘Pip’s behaviour when she said it.’

‘Oh come off it, he’s just a dog, he wouldn’t understand what Grandma was on about.’

‘I wouldn’t be too sure.’

‘Pffft!’

‘I’m just saying…’

‘Anyway, what on earth made you gasp like that?’

‘It was that photograph, the one of you holding the tartan teddy bear with a red scarf around its neck.’

‘Oh, that one – but why did it make you gasp?’

‘Well, it’s just that… well, do you know where that teddy bear is now?’

‘No, I haven’t a clue. It disappeared one day and hasn’t been seen since. I was only a toddler at the time, so it was my mum who told me later of it doing, what she called, “a vanishing act”. She was upset at the time because it had been her teddy when she was little and apparently, when I was asked where it was, I just kept pointing at the mirror.’

‘Oh Lucy, I can hardly believe it, but I think I’ve got a confession to make. When I was a toddler, I went missing; people searched for hours, they even called the police to search for me. Then I just turned up in my bedroom, which had been searched along with the rest of the house earlier. My parents heard movement in my bedroom, rushed upstairs and there I was, sitting on the floor… holding a tartan teddy bear, with a red scarf around his neck!’

It was Lucy’s turn to gasp, but Horla continued, ‘It was at that point that Dad had to confess to Mum about his powers and insisted that I be kept away from the mirrors because I may have inherited those powers.’

‘Gosh, that means that my imaginary friend wasn’t so imaginary after all – it was you all along!’

‘So here we are thinking that we’ve only known each other for a few days, when in fact we’ve known each other for years,’ Horla chuckled.

‘Not that either of us can remember much about it,’ Lucy replied.

‘No, that’s true – although I vaguely remembered your room, don’t you remember I told you everything seemed familiar when I saw it?’

‘Oh yes, that’s right.’

‘And the reason why, was because I’d been in it before.’

‘Wow, isn’t that incredible… but I thought when you looked in your mirror you had to concentrate to find me; do you think that’s what you did as a toddler?’

‘I must have done, being alone
